The weekend of the 7th-8th May 2016 saw cadets from 422 (Corby) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets assisting and competing at two sports events.
On Saturday 7th May, for the second year running, cadets and staff assisted at the National Volleyball Super 8's Playoff Finals competition. Working courtside, the cadets assisted sweeping, ball collecting, scoring and even manning the cameras.
Daniel Thompson from Volleyball England said, "On behalf of the competitions team at Volleyball England I would like to pass on our thanks to Corby Air Cadets Squadron for your excellent contribution on Saturday. It was once again another fantastic event held at the National Volleyball Centre, I hope that the cadets enjoyed themselves.
Volleyball England are blessed to have such amazing volunteers such as yourself, your input is valued tremendously. The cadets all shown great attitude and application throughout the day.
Volleyball England would welcome Corby Air Cadets Squadron to assist at our events in the future."
On Sunday 8th May the cadets had an early start as they made their way to South and East Midland Wing's annual athletics competition held at Saffron Lane Sports Stadium in Leicester.
Cadets were greeted by the Squadron Civilian Committee with a takeaway breakfast, including a sausage/bacon bap, soft drink and a cereal bar.
Even though the temperatures soared throughout the day, the 20 plus cadets representing the Squadron put in their all, cheering each other on and showing great teamwork. The team would like to thank the Civilian Committee and parents for donating baskets full of fruit and water for the day. It was certainly needed and kept moral high.
As the results started coming in, we were ecstatic to hear that 4 cadets had made it through to represent the Wing at the Region athletics competition in June.
Notably, Cadet Wilson placed 1st in the Boys Category Javelin, Corporal Mathieson placed 1st in the Youth Category Shot Putt and Cadet Lucy Kendall placed 1st in the Girls Category 400m, which is her third representation at Wing level in just over 6 months of joining the Air Cadets. She also placed 2nd in the 1500m with Cadet Fountain placing 2nd in the Youths Category 400m.
The Squadron were pleased to hear that they placed 11th overall in the competition, moving them up into the top half of the Wing for Athletics.
Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant Kev Ritchie RAFVR(T) said, "Last year the team placed 18th overall. This year, the cadets put in a tremendous amount of effort on the day and should be extremely proud of this year's result. It's a massive improvement!".
